Police in Arlington, Texas, are defending the use of a Taser on a suicidal man who had doused himself in gasoline.
According to a numerous reports, the man became engulfed in flames after being shocked by the stun gun at an Arlington home last week.
Officers threw a blanket over the man in an effort to smother the fire. The man, later identified by NBC DFW 5 as Gabriel Olivas, was hospitalized reportedly in critical condition with burns to 80 percent of his body.
A police spokeswoman told the Star-Telegram that the officer used the Taser "to subdue him" because he believed that the man was holding a lighter in his hand and was about to use it.
