Nunavut RCMP officer charged with assault

An RCMP officer was charged with assault Tuesday for an incident that occurred in Sanirajak last summer.

Cpl. Ian Crowe, who was working as the detachment commander in the community at the time, was responding to a service call, the RCMP said in a Wednesday news release.

“The criminal charge laid is very serious,” stated Chief Supt. Amanda Jones, the RCMP’s commanding officer in Nunavut.

The conduct of police officers is critical in maintaining the trust of the communities they serve, Jones said.

Crowe is currently on administrative duty, which means he will not be responding to service calls, according to an RCMP spokesperson.

Crowe is not the only RCMP officer to face charges for incidents alleged to have happened during the summer of 2020.

Const. Ira Tarleton faces charges of assault causing bodily harm, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000 for a service call he responded to in Kimmirut. Tarleton was stationed in Ottawa at the time but in Kimmirut for relief capacity. Tarleton is currently suspended without pay. The charges against him are still before the court.

Crowe will next appear in court in Iqaluit on Sept. 16.
