Was police shooting in Cambridge excessive use of force?

KITCHENER — Sgt. Richard Dorling is not on trial — the man he shot, Joshua Hannaford, is — but the question of whether he used excessive force was front and centre on Friday.

"There is no gun pointed at him, no knife pointed at him," Hannaford's defence lawyer, Sarah Malik, said in closing submissions. "He had to consider a less-lethal option — not immediately jump to the most-lethal option that exists."

But Crown prosecutor Michael Carnegie said the Waterloo Regional Police sergeant feared for his life and felt he had to shoot or be shot by Hannaford.
