"We can't let this slide," supporters say at vigil for man fatally injured in prison

More than 400 people attended a candlelit vigil at the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce park Friday to honour the memory of a 21-year-old Black man, Nicous D’Andre Spring, who was mortally injured on Christmas Eve while in the custody of prison guards at the Montreal Detention Centre.

Spring lost consciousness after what authorities described as a “physical intervention” and was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Quebec’s Ministry of Public Security later confirmed that Spring was “illegally detained,” since he was scheduled for release from the detention centre (also known as Bordeaux jail) a day earlier, on Dec. 23.

Brandon Ragain, a close friend of Spring, showed up at the vigil to pay his respects. The two used to hang out often at Benny Park and they composed rap tracks together. Spring went by stage name of YK Lyrical.
