Police watchdog investigating after man dies in Airdrie RCMP custody

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called on to investigate the circumstances behind the death.

RCMP said officers responded to an incident June 6 at 1:40 p.m. and arrested a 35-year-old man in relation to an investigation around uttering threats.

“During the course of the arrest, a struggle ensued and the man was taken to the ground sustaining what appeared to be minor injuries,” RCMP said in the news release.

“EMS was called to the scene and the man was placed in the rear of the police vehicle to await their arrival. While seated in the vehicle, the man appeared to deliberately strike his head on the Plexiglas shield between the front and rear seats of the police vehicle.”
