Former Peel police detective charged with sexual assault from nearly 30 years ago

A former Peel Region police detective has been charged with one count of sexual assault after a Special Investigations Unit investigation into an incident from 28 years ago.

On Aug 25, 2020, a woman contacted Peel Region police alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by an officer in Barrie in the summer of 1992, the SIU said in a news release Tursday.

Peel police then contacted SIU the same day and an investigation ensued.

An SIU spokesperson wouldn't reveal whether the officer was on- or off-duty at the time of incident when asked by the Star.

Paul Chisholm is set to appear in court on Jan, 11. 2021.

The SIU is a civilian watchdog which investigates serious injury, death or alleged sexual assault involving police.
