56-year-old man dies after being shot by police in St. Catharines

ST. CATHARINES—A 56-year-old man has died after he was shot by police in St. Catharines Tuesday afternoon, Ontario’s police watchdog says.

Special Investigations Unit spokeswoman Monica Hudon confirmed Thursday the man, identified as Fred Penner, died in hospital on Wednesday.

Niagara Regional Police said officers were called to a residential street in the city’s west-end around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a man armed with a knife.

When officers arrived on the scene, an altercation ensued during which they shot the man.
