Hearing against officer accused of assaulting man, using racial slurs adjourned after alleged arrest of witness

A disciplinary hearing against an Edmonton police officer accused of assaulting a man during an arrest and calling him racial slurs was suddenly postponed Wednesday after a witness alleged the officer arrested her two weeks before her testimony.

Const. Nathan Downing is accused of using excessive force during the 2015 arrest of Nasser El Hallak.

El Hallak alleges Downing struck him multiple times while he was handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser on March 25, 2015. He also claims Downing called him a “f—ing n—–” and referred to “f—ing Muslims” during the course of the arrest.

Downing is accused of a number of offences under the Police Act, including two counts of unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority, a count of discreditable conduct and three counts of deceit.
