Police use of force investigation launched after criminal flight arrest: ASIRT

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating allegations a suspect arrested after a city police pursuit sustained a broken nose as a result of the amount of force used during his arrest.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said Tuesday it is expanding its focus on police conduct, the injuries sustained by the driver of the vehicle as well injuries sustained by a pedestrian who was struck during the criminal flight.

The pursuit began after officers near 101 Street and 108 Avenue spotted a Buick Rendezvous bearing a stolen licence plate in the early morning of July 30.

The driver stopped and got out of the car before the officers approached him in their marked cruiser with its emergency lights activated. When officers went to speak to him, the driver jumped back behind the wheel and fled, a release said.
