Collection of race data in police use-of-force cases depends on province, Toronto chief says

Amid growing calls for the collection and release of race-based statistics on police encounters, the Toronto Police Service says it is constrained by provincial rules dictating what identifying information must be recorded every time an officer uses force against a civilian.

In a report filed in advance of next week’s police board meeting, Toronto police chief Mark Saunders acknowledges the expectation his force will collect and report on demographic data “will almost certainly expand in the near future.”
